The Return of the Redeemed to Zion
1
The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom;
like the crocus 2 it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and shouting.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.

5
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf shall be opened;
6
then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy.
For waters shall break forth in the wilderness
and streams in the desert;
7
the burning sand shall become a pool
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp;[b]
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.
8
A highway shall be there,[c]

the unclean shall not travel on it,[d]
but it shall be for God’s people;[e]
no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.
9
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
10
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain joy and gladness,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Acts 11, 2 readers
Peter’s Report to the Church at Jerusalem
1 Now the apostles and the brothers and sisters who were in Judea heard that the gentiles had also accepted the word of God. 2 So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers[a] criticized him, 3 saying, “Why did you go to uncircumcised men and eat with them?” 4 Then Peter began to explain it to them, step by step, saying, 5 “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. There was something like a large sheet coming down from heaven, being lowered by its four corners, and it came close to me. 6 As I looked at it closely I saw four-footed animals, beasts of prey, reptiles, and birds of the air. 7 I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; kill and eat.’ 8 But I replied, ‘By no means, Lord, for nothing profane or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’ 9 But a second time the voice answered from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not call profane.’ 10 This happened three times; then everything was pulled up again to heaven. 11 At that very moment three men, sent to me from Caesarea, arrived at the house where we were. 12 The Spirit told me to go with them and not to make a distinction between them and us.[b] These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered the man’s house. 13 He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and bring Simon, who is called Peter; 14 he will give you a message by which you and your entire household will be saved.’ 15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them just as it had upon us at the beginning.
Second reader
16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If then God gave them the same gift that he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could hinder God?” 18 When they heard this, they were silenced. And they praised God, saying, “Then God has given even to the gentiles the repentance that leads to life.”
The Church in Antioch
19 Now those who were scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, and they spoke the word to no one except Jews. 20 But among them were some men of Cyprus and Cyrene who, on coming to Antioch, spoke to the Hellenists[c] also, proclaiming the Lord Jesus. 21 The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number became believers and turned to the Lord. 22 News of this came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast devotion, 24 for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great many people were brought to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he had found him he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for an entire year they met with the church and taught a great many people, and it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called “Christians.”
27 At that time prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. 28 One of them named Agabus stood up and predicted by the Spirit that there would be a severe famine over all the world, and this took place during the reign of Claudius. 29 The disciples determined that, according to their ability, each would send relief to the brothers and sisters living in Judea; 30 this they did, sending it to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Psalm 17
Prayer for Deliverance from Persecutors
A Prayer of David.
1
Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2
From you let my vindication come;
let your eyes see the right.
3
If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
my mouth does not transgress.
4
As for what others do, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5
My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.
6
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me; hear my words.
7
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.
8
Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9
from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10
They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11
They flush me out;[a] now they surround me;
they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.
12
They are like a lion eager to tear,
like a young lion lurking in ambush.
13
Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!
By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,
14
from mortals—by your hand, O Lord--
from mortals whose portion in life is in this world.
May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them;
may their children have more than enough;
may they leave something over to their little ones.
15
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Psalm 18, 2 readers
Royal Thanksgiving for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:
1
I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
so I shall be saved from my enemies.
4
The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of perdition assailed me;
5
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6
In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.
7
Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and reeled because he was angry.
8
Smoke went up from his nostrils
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9
He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
10
He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.
11
He made darkness his covering around him,
his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
12
Out of the brightness before him
there broke through his clouds
hailstones and coals of fire.
13
The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice.[a]
14
And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
16
He reached down from on high; he took me;
he drew me out of mighty waters.
17
He delivered me from my strong enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.
18
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
19
He brought me out into a broad place;
he delivered me because he delighted in me.
20
The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.
21
For I have kept the ways of the Lord
and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22
For all his ordinances were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.
23
I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt.
24
Therefore the Lord has recompensed me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25
With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;
26
with the pure you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
Second reader
27
For you deliver a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28
It is you who light my lamp;
the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
29
By you I can outrun a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
30
This God—his way is perfect;
the promise of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
31
For who is God except the Lord?
And who is a rock besides our God?
32
The God who has girded me with strength
and made my way safe.[b]
33
He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights.
34
He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35
You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
your help[c] has made me great.
36
You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37
I pursued my enemies and overtook them
and did not turn back until they were consumed.
38
I struck them down so that they were unable to rise;
they fell under my feet.
39
For you girded me with strength for the battle;
you made my assailants sink under me.
40
You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.
41
They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;
they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42
I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.
43
You delivered me from strife with the peoples;[d]
you made me head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.
44
As soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45
Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their strongholds.
46
The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,
47
the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me,
48
who delivered me from my enemies;
indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries;
you delivered me from the violent.
49
For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations
and sing praises to your name.
50
Great triumphs he gives to his king
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his descendants forever.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Isaiah 36
Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem
1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, King Sennacherib of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. 2 The king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh with a great army from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. He stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the fuller’s field. 3 And there came out to him Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder.
4 The Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you base this reliance of yours? 5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom, then, do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me? 6 See, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of anyone who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him. 7 But if you say to me, ‘We rely on the Lord our God,’ [[is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?]][a] 8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.”
11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” 12 But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you and not to the people sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?”
13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 Thus says the king: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. 15 Do not let Hezekiah make you rely on the Lord by saying, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’ 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat from your own vine and your own fig tree and drink water from your own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Do not let Hezekiah mislead you by saying, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ Has any of the gods of the nations delivered their land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 20 Who among all the gods of these countries have delivered their countries out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?”
21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was in charge of the palace, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.

James 4
Friendship with the World
1 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2 You want something and do not have it, so you commit murder. And you covet[a] something and cannot obtain it, so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 Adulterers![b] Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the spirit that God caused to dwell[c] in us desire envy? 6 But God gives all the more grace; therefore it says,
“God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.”
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into dejection. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Warning against Judging Another
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters. Whoever speaks evil against another or judges another speaks evil against the law and judges the law, but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12 There is one lawgiver and judge[d] who is able to save and to destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbor?
Boasting about Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a town and spend a year there, doing business and making money.” 14 Yet you do not even know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wishes, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance; all such boasting is evil. 17 Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do and fails to do it commits sin.

Psalm 19
God’s Glory in Creation and the Law
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1
The heavens are telling the glory of God,
and the firmament[a] proclaims his handiwork.
2
Day to day pours forth speech,
and night to night declares knowledge.
3
There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4
yet their voice[b] goes out through all the earth
and their words to the end of the world.
In the heavens[c] he has set a tent for the sun,
5
which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6
Its rising is from the end of the heavens
and its circuit to the end of them,
and nothing is hid from its heat.
7
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
8
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;
9
the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
10
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
12
But who can detect one’s own errors?
Clear me from hidden faults.
13
Keep back your servant also from the insolent;[d]
do not let them have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless
and innocent of great transgression.
14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable to you,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 20
Prayer for Victory
To the leader. A Psalm of David.
1
The Lord answer you in the day of trouble!
The name of the God of Jacob protect you!
2
May he send you help from the sanctuary
and give you support from Zion.
3
May he remember all your offerings
and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices. Selah
4
May he grant you your heart’s desire
and fulfill all your plans.
5
May we shout for joy over your victory
and in the name of our God set up our banners.
May the Lord fulfill all your petitions.
6
Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.
7
Some take pride in chariots and some in horses,
but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.
8
They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.
9
Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.[a]

1
Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;
give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2
From you let my vindication come;
let your eyes see the right.
3
If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;
my mouth does not transgress.
4
As for what others do, by the word of your lips
I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5
My steps have held fast to your paths;
my feet have not slipped.
6
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God;
incline your ear to me; hear my words.
7
Wondrously show your steadfast love,
O savior of those who seek refuge
from their adversaries at your right hand.
8
Guard me as the apple of the eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9
from the wicked who despoil me,
my deadly enemies who surround me.
10
They close their hearts to pity;
with their mouths they speak arrogantly.
11
They flush me out;[a] now they surround me;
they set their eyes to cast me to the ground.
12
They are like a lion eager to tear,
like a young lion lurking in ambush.
13
Rise up, O Lord, confront them, overthrow them!
By your sword deliver my life from the wicked,
14
from mortals—by your hand, O Lord--
from mortals whose portion in life is in this world.
May their bellies be filled with what you have stored up for them;
may their children have more than enough;
may they leave something over to their little ones.
15
As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;
when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

4
The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of perdition assailed me;
5
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6
In my distress I called upon the Lord;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.
7
Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and reeled because he was angry.
8
Smoke went up from his nostrils
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9
He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
10
He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.
11
He made darkness his covering around him,
his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
12
Out of the brightness before him
there broke through his clouds
hailstones and coals of fire.
13
The Lord also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice.[a]
14
And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
15
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lord,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
16
He reached down from on high; he took me;
he drew me out of mighty waters.
17
He delivered me from my strong enemy
and from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me.
18
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the Lord was my support.
19
He brought me out into a broad place;
he delivered me because he delighted in me.
20
The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me.
25
With the loyal you show yourself loyal;
with the blameless you show yourself blameless;
26
with the pure you show yourself pure;
and with the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
Second reader
27
For you deliver a humble people,
but the haughty eyes you bring down.
28
It is you who light my lamp;
the Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
29
By you I can outrun a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall.
30
This God—his way is perfect;
the promise of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
35
You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand has supported me;
your help[c] has made me great.
36
You gave me a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip.
37
I pursued my enemies and overtook them
and did not turn back until they were consumed.
38
I struck them down so that they were unable to rise;
they fell under my feet.
39
For you girded me with strength for the battle;
you made my assailants sink under me.
40
You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
and those who hated me I destroyed.
41
They cried for help, but there was no one to save them;
they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them.
42
I beat them fine, like dust before the wind;
I cast them out like the mire of the streets.
43
You delivered me from strife with the peoples;[d]
you made me head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me.
44
As soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me;
foreigners came cringing to me.
45
Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their strongholds.
46
The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock,
and exalted be the God of my salvation,
47
the God who gave me vengeance
and subdued peoples under me,
48
who delivered me from my enemies;
indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries;
you delivered me from the violent.

3
There is no speech, nor are there words;
their voice is not heard;
4
yet their voice[b] goes out through all the earth
and their words to the end of the world.
In the heavens[c] he has set a tent for the sun,
5
which comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
and like a strong man runs its course with joy.
6
Its rising is from the end of the heavens
and its circuit to the end of them,
and nothing is hid from its heat.
7
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
making wise the simple;
8
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
enlightening the eyes;
9
the fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
and righteous altogether.
10
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
11
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

6
Now I know that the Lord will help his anointed;
he will answer him from his holy heaven
with mighty victories by his right hand.
7
Some take pride in chariots and some in horses,
but our pride is in the name of the Lord our God.
8
They will collapse and fall,
but we shall rise and stand upright.
9
Give victory to the king, O Lord;
answer us when we call.[a]
